The origin of the Khau Vai Market
The festival’s origin is based on local legend. As told by local residents, there was once an ethnic couple whose relationship was disapproved of by their parents. The girl, named Út, came from the Giay ethnic commune, while the boy named Ba was from the Nung ethnic group in the Khau Vai village.
Their love story came to an end when aggression arose between their families in Khau Vai village. They had to leave their love behind and continue on separate paths. Despite this, they still meet each other once a year on the same date and location where the conflict occurred.
To commemorate a couple who loved each other but could not be together, and sacrificed their love to keep the two villages at peace, every year on March 27th, local residents organize a ceremony according to traditional rituals.
Gradually, it has become a festival that is deeply ingrained in the subconscious of people inside and outside the region. According to local residents, in the past, every March 27th, this place was a meeting place for people with unresolved love, for some reason, they could not marry each other. They come here to chat, tell each other about their current lives, and exchange songs, khen (a traditional musical instrument), dances, or buy goods to serve their daily needs.
At the end of the festival, they return to their daily lives, ready for work and production. From that, the Khau Vai Love Market has become a famous love market in Ha Giang known to many tourists inside and outside the province.
